Fire crews initially struggled to contain a fire at a house in mid-Canterbury this morning 16 May 2021
The family managed to escape before four crews arrived at Chalmers Ave in Ashburton at about 6.30.
A FENZ spokesman says crews are mopping up the fire, which damaged the back half of the house.
He says they initially had difficulty gaining access, as old roofing iron was still under the new roof.
A fire investigator is on the way to the scene.

A family has escaped an early morning house fire in Ashburton.
Four fire crews rushed to reports of a fire at a Chalmers Ave house at 6.20am.
About a third of those who presented in person made mention of the long-delayed bridge project, with the proposed location of Chalmers Ave continuing to be a sore point among many in the community. Many concerns about the proposed location centred on the bridge running through a largely residential area, public safety and heavy vehicle driving routes. The floundering venture, which was reportedly earmarked for 2026 by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), had now become a matter of significant urgency according to rural leaders. Federated Farmers’ Mid-Canterbury president David Clark said the “Auckland-styled traffic jams” being experienced in the district made the project a high priority.
