Game of Thrones started as a dark, rich, captivating fantasy epic. Over the years, however, the show kept getting darker, particularly in regards to how it treated its female characters, who seemed to increasingly bear the show’s most horrific, disturbing violence. Unfortunately, that also turns out to have been the case on the other side of the camera on at least one occasion.

Game of Thrones actress Hannah Waddingham, who played Unella on the hit HBO show, has shared new details on what it was like filming a particularly painful scene that she described as the worst day of her life (besides childbirth).
Cersei (Lena Headey) gets revenge on Unella by basically waterboarding her. You might have thought this would be done through CG or some kind of camera trick, but this was a practical stunt. And it was horrible, Waddingham said to Collider.

Hannah Waddingham is best known to “Ted Lasso” fans as the complicatedly endearing AFC Richmond owner Rebecca on the light-hearted Apple TV+ comedy. But a quick costume change might remind any “Ted Lasso” viewers that also watched “Game of Thrones” of Waddingham’s iconic role from the HBO series: “shame” nun Unella.
And according to Waddingham, her final performance given as Unella was much less enjoyable than an average day on the “Ted Lasso” set, as she was “waterboarded” for 10 hours to shoot the scene in which Cersei (Lena Headey) gets revenge for all Unella has done to her.

If you don’t recognize Hannah, she portrayed Unella in the hit HBO series. Her character served under the cult leader-ish High Sparrow (
Jonathan Pryce) and is one of the famous characters who shouts “shame” during Cersei’s walk of atonement.
