A 29-year-old man who authorities said shot and wounded an Escondido police sergeant early Monday morning was found dead hours later of an apparent suicide.
Police officials said the man was discovered inside a vacant apartment on West Lincoln Avenue near Avocado Avenue nearly five hours after the sergeant was shot while behind the wheel of his patrol car.
The shooting of the police sergeant prompted an urgent call on the radio 1199, officer needing assistance and that drew a huge law enforcement response from departments in the region. Escondido police Capt. Justin Murphy said perhaps as many as 100 officers rushed to Escondido to help find the gunman.
ESCONDIDO (KUSI) – A police officer was shot Monday morning after responding to a domestic violence incident in Escondido and authorities were searching for the suspected shooter, police said.
Shortly after 2:45 a.m., officers responded to a reported domestic violence disturbance at a home in the 1300 block of Morning View Drive, just west of Centre City Parkway and north of West Lincoln Avenue, according to Escondido police.

Police said the suspect was found dead in a vacant apartment at approximately 7:45 a.m.
The Escondido Police Department and allied agencies received information that the suspect was seen in a vacant apartment in the 700 block of West Lincoln.

ESCONDIDO (CNS) - At least one person was killed in a crash on the Escondido (15) Freeway in Escondido, authorities said today.
The car described as a silver sedan reportedly became wrapped around a pole on the Centre City Parkway just before the Centre City Parkway offramp to the southbound Escondido Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash caused 33 feet of guardrail damage and a freeway pole was scraped and dented, officers said.
No further information was available, including the number of people inside the crashed car.
