ESCONDIDO    A 29-year-old man who authorities said shot and wounded an Escondido police sergeant early Monday morning was found dead hours later of an apparent suicide. Police officials said the man was discovered inside a vacant apartment on West Lincoln Avenue near Avocado Avenue nearly five hours after the sergeant was shot while behind the wheel of his patrol car. The shooting of the police sergeant prompted an urgent call on the radio 1199, officer needing assistance and that drew a huge law enforcement response from departments in the region. Escondido police Capt. Justin Murphy said perhaps as many as 100 officers rushed to Escondido to help find the gunman.
