Temuka getting tired of being bypassed

JOHN BISSET/Stuff Looking northwards with State Highway 1 and Vine St on the left and the area on the right which the Temuka Community Board wants developed and made more visually appealing. Efforts are being made to lure travellers off an “uninviting” section of State Highway 1 and into Temuka’s town centre. Currently, according to the Temuka Community Board, travellers on State Highway 1/Vine St drive were not getting a positive impression of the town as the bypass road went between the saleyards and the rear of buildings fronting the main street, King St. Board chairman Paddy O’Reilly said in a submission to the Timaru District Council’s draft Long Term Plan, written on behalf of the board, that the stretch of highway along this route was dotted with yellow lines along both the sides of Vine St and “uninviting.”

Timaru District Council buys up Temuka buildings for close to $1m

“The net cost to council will be much less than this as the part of the land and buildings not required by council will be sold. “The car park is being subdivided from the remainder of the properties which will be sold, with the car park being retained by council. “The car park is considered a strategic asset as it provides public parking for the Temuka CBD.” The building at 91 King St in Temuka is listed as being earthquake prone, with an assessment revealing it is less than 34 per cent of New Building Standard.
