SANTA MONICA (CNS) - A gas main was ruptured during an excavation today in Santa Monica, prompting road closures and the evacuation of about 65 homes.
Santa Monica Fire Department personnel responded to the gas leak about 11:40 a.m. in the area of 1101 Stanford Street near Lipton Avenue, and a Southern California Gas Co. crew was sent to make repairs.
The damage was caused by a third party contractor working in the area, according to a SoCalGas statement. The utility advised residents and businesses in the area that there may be a natural gas odor in the area as crews work to fix the break.
