The 2023 Mainstreet Market kicked off its first of five events Thursday evening. A variety of food and craft vendors set up their items on the Clay County Courthouse lawn, such as jewelry from Tina Jensen and treats from Kaitlyn’s Cakes. Ceramic pieces by Storm Lake artist Ron Netten are now on display at Arts on Grand. Netten’s work will remain at the gallery until Aug. 12, and all pieces are available for purchase. Arts on Grand held a reception for Netten Thursday. The artist explained a bit about his background, influences and what inspires his art to a small crowd. To celebrate the Fourth of July, a fireworks display was launched out by the Clay County Fairgrounds on Wednesday night by the Spencer Fireworks Committee. Hosted by the Spencer Chamber of Commerce, the event was rescheduled from Tuesday due to rainfall. (Photos by Celia Brocker)

Many Spencer residents with an appreciation for botany enjoyed the annual Garden Tour from the Clay County Garden Club. Community members like Sue Eilers traveled to five unique gardens in town to appreciate the variety of plants, flowers and produce in each. The individual gardens also had entertainment or additional items for guests to admire, such as Steve Wolter demonstrating the ease of floriculture and Christina Mueggenberg painting.
