An African horse sickness outbreak has been confirmed in the Cederberg Local Municipality.
The Western Cape Agriculture Department has put in place restrictions on the movement of equine animals in the affected area.
Animal owners need permission to transport animals.
The Western Cape s provincial veterinary laboratory has confirmed an outbreak of African Horse Sickness (AHS) in the Cederberg Local Municipality.
Daniel Johnson, a spokesperson for the Western Cape Agriculture Department said the disease was suspected after five horses became sick on a farm. After a recent death, laboratory tests confirmed the disease.

Johnson said as a precaution, the province had established a preliminary outbreak-controlled area to avoid the spread of the disease.
