The Supreme Court's refusal to interfere with an order telling Karnataka to release 5,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days has sparked protests in the former state.
Cauvery water dispute: The protest is apparently a gesture to show that if Karnataka does not release water then the Tamil Nadu farmers who have been pushed to poverty will be forced to eat rat meat to survive.
The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) has ordered Karnataka to release 3000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu until October 15. This decision has raised political tensions for the Congress regime as protests continue. Karnataka had previously been asked to release 5000 cusecs, which was scaled down to 3000 cusecs despite Karnataka s explanation of low water levels.
