The Associated Student Government Sustainability Committee hosted GREENOUT on Saturday afternoon to raise awareness about environmentally sustainable practices. Attendees visited club booths on Deering Meadow that had food and activities commemorating Earth Month 2024. Weinberg sophomore and ASG Sustainability Committee co-chair Melanie Tapia said the group puts on the festival to “showcase the various intersections.
Weinberg senior Sam Rappin said he became familiar with plant-based eating practices while studying in Copenhagen, Denmark. His experience abroad led him to establish the Northwestern chapter of the Plant Futures Initiative, a sustainable eating organization with more than 50 chapters nationwide. Rappin, the chapter’s acting president, said the sector of plant-based foods and sustainable.
The freshmen performers who comprise Muse etc. experienced a unique first year — playing at Dillo Day’s heralded main stage and releasing an EP, all within a few months. Muse etc. is a collection of first-year students who formed a band in the first few weeks of Fall Quarter. McCormick freshman Timofei Asinski plays on.
GREENOUT, a music festival sponsored by the Associated Student Government Sustainability Committee, is set to kick off with a slate of student performers Saturday on Deering Meadow. The festival, scheduled from 2-6 p.m., is the final event in a week-long ASG series celebrating Earth Day. The committee said they planned the week to engage students.
Northwestern has almost 20 different environmental student organizations and while each club is independent, Associate Director of Sustainability Julie Cahillane said she saw the potential for these groups to work together on larger initiatives and events. In that spirit, Cahillane and sustainNU, along with NU’s Institute for Sustainability and Energy, invited more than 10 environment.
