The story of a large stained glass window, commissioned in 1877 that depicts Jesus and Biblical figures Martha, Mary, and the Samaritan Woman as people of color, is beginning the newest chapter in its long and fascinating life.
It’s hard to overstate Lombard Pozzi’s impact on historic preservation in Rhode Island, and especially in his hometown of Bristol. That acknowledgement has now led to the creation of the Lombard J. Pozzi Center for Historic Preservation Education.
The organization will sponsor an event in Independence Park on Wednesday, Aug. 23, at 6 p.m., commemorating the International Day for the Remembrance of the Abolition of Slavery.
Scholars think the window, commissioned in 1877, could be the first of its kind. "It should stand as a landmark in American culture," said art historian Virginia Raguin.
