Corrections Department accused of secrecy
Copyright © 2020 Albuquerque Journal SANTA FE – A new legal nonprofit group filed a lawsuit against the New Mexico Corrections Department on Wednesday, alleging the agency violated public record laws and has a “culture of secrecy.” Specifically, the fledgling group, the New Mexico Prison and Jail Project, alleged the department purposely skirted a public records request by claiming it can create its own rules and regulations to avoid complying with the state’s open record laws. Matthew Coyte In a Thursday news conference, project Director Steven Robert Allen, along with steering committee members Matthew Coyte, Cathy Ansheles and Barron Jones, all volunteers, announced the creation of the nonprofit that aims to help incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people in New Mexico. Kate Loewe is also on the committee, but wasn’t at the conference.
