My honor the convene this plenary, and when we were planning the conference, we always liked to bring our heavy hitters out. And i think that today is one of those occasions, in which we have a collection of fine scholars and activists here to address the theme. So what we are, and what we have decided to do is to run the plenary more as a round table, and the moderated conversation about the issues with the great migration, and i wanted to introduce our panelists, and give them an opportunity to speak for a few minutes as far as their own work and perceptions and ideas about the great migration, and then move on to the question and answer followed by a discussion with us, and followed by a question and answer session with the audience. So i wanted to introduce our panelists. The first panelist is joe trotter who is a giant history professor and prior with the Carnegie Mellon center in pittsburgh, and previously the president of the africanamerican studies in the urban life and economy
And together we mark the 400th anniversary of the arrival of captive africans in north america. Todays gathering is one of remembrance and reflection, and also one of celebration. We are gathered in the front lawn of an historic institution, in fact, the oldest Cultural Organization in the commonwealth of virginia. For 200 years, weve been collecting materials for the purpose of telling the story of this place. Some 14 million artifacts are housed in the walls behind me. We have much to be proud of. But we still have so very much we must do to be the state History Museum we deserve, to represent all and welcomes all. [applause] dr. Carter woodson, the man considered the founder of black history wrote, those who have no record of their forebears lose the inspiration that comes from the teaching of history. How true. Detroit has been the motor city capital of the world since 1915 when there were over 42 Companies Making cars and another 75 Companies Making parts. So, we had been, while other towns built cars, we built lots of cars. Prior to 1900, the detroit area enjoyed a wealth of strong manufacturing. A lot of it, based in building carriage bodies, but iron stoves, railroad cars, railroad wheels. Detroit understood the manufacturing process, but also understood how to deal with steel, iron, wood, rubber. Detroit had all of the talent and designers and toolmakers here, and the things it took to make an automobile. Why dont we go inside . Lets see the first car that traveled on the streets of detroit. What we are looking at here looks very much like an oldfashioned wagon. We just do not have a horse in front of it. The horses are sitting inside the vehicle.
