United states Navy Memorial. Today, were pleased to have jan k. Herman here to discuss his new Naval Institute book, lucky few, the fall of saigon and the rescue mission of the uss kirk. Mr. Herman served as historian of the Navy Medicine department and special assistance to the Surgeon General for 33 years. Hes keeping busy in retirements as evidenced by this book. He has written numerous articles and books, including battle station sick bay, medicine and the korean war, and navy history in vietnam. I appreciate that introduction. At first glance, the story that youre going to hear today about the uss kirk seems like a little story. It seems like an almost insignificant tale, at that. Thats at first glance. For 35 years, it remained unknown and untold. That may be for a simple reason. Its a v
Devils brigade. I was on the hallowed grounds of arlington today to see the canadian cross of honor erected in 1930 by our government in those majestic fields to honor the 3,000 americans who died in world war i serving with canadian units. And the heroics of the devils brigade continue. Our joint defense of north america through norad, korea where tommy prince served in the battle of kapyong, in the korean war. In afghanistan, where the 40 americans who died serving alongside canadians in kandahar are held as close to our chest as the 158 men and women we frost that dangerous province. And today our Royal Canadian air force and our soldiers from the jtf 2, the successor unit to the devils brigade, are serving in iraq in cause of freedom and alongside our allies and friends like those in the United States. So its my honor to represent canada here today to thank you for recognizing these special, special veterans and allowing us to remember the service and sacrifice their unit remembers

In recent months, our nations senior civilian defense and military leaders have testified to this committee about the severe threats we face around the world. They have reported shortfalls and readiness that our military advantage over our potential adversaries is eroding and the dire need for new capabilities. And yet, as secretary mattis testified here on tuesday, the greatest immediate threat that our military faces is right here in washington. Fiscal uncertainty, continuing resolutions, arbitrary and inadequate caps on defense spending, four more years of the budget control act and the threat of sequestration.
