Students, staff and alumni, packed into a town hall meeting at American University today. Coming together for a common goal, to fight racism. The Student Government organized the meeting after racist displays were found on the campus. Kristin wright talked to students. Did they feel like this meeting was productive . Reporter yeah, students told us they felt like the twohour town hall was productive. The Student Government association said it will not be the last. I believe this was a Tipping Point that officially caused everyone to say, enough is enough. The outcry at American University. Reporte i never imagined i would become the president or the target of a hate crime. Reporter Taylor Dumpson called this town hall meeting, students want stronger defined campus protocols on hate crimes and other biasrelated incidents. They want au police to track the number of hate crimes and they want to know what happens during and after an investigation. Im really glad that we had this open forum
Their parents told to come pick them up. The flames continued to grow. Nearby residents told us there was a lot of black smoke. And a strange smell. As i came outside and i saw the plumes of smoke everywhere, i was like, oh, man, whats going on, is the school on fire . Like oh, no. I ran out here, saw everybody standing in front and taking pictures stuff like that and could see the whole bridge fully in flames 10 to 15 feet up in the air. Reporter did it smell bad, any chemical you could definitely smell, like the chemicals, like, from whatever it was. It wasnt a natural smell. Reporter now the good news is the flames have been put out. No more smell in the neighborhood. No more evacuations and the kids are accounted for. Were told that the fire is still under investigation and they do not have a cause. The train tracks, by the way, have not been in use for some time. Truthfully i believe rosemari rejection had far more to go with the brillance of his presidency than anyone can understand. Yes, he was our countrys greater champion of what we all call mental retardation. To this day his legacy of innovation creating ichd, university affiliated centers, president s council remains today one of the great histories of our country. But beyond the work he did for people with intellectual disabilities, i believe it was rosemarys influence that centralized him and all of us to be aware of vulnerable people. I think i can say, that not one among the thousands who have written about him has understood what really like to be a brother of a person who has mental retardation and tonight i want to say that i have never said before, more than any single individual, rosemary had the greatest influence.
