As retired nurses, we fervently support the passage of the Massachusetts Death with Dignity bill.
We have witnessed terminally ill patients suffer with extreme pain waiting until their next pain medication is due or so medicated that they cannot speak
The Death with Dignity bill is a compassionate option of a legally prescribed patient-administered medication for those who are terminally ill, mentally capable of making their own healthcare decisions and facing severe pain and suffering.
Nine states, including Maine, Vermont, New Jersey plus Washington, D.C., have passed similar bills. Seventy percent of Massachusetts citizens support the bill according to a Boston Globe/Suffolk University 2020 Poll. The Globe editorial on Dec. 6 called for passage of this bill.
