Members of the Evanston community ventured out to Mason Park on Friday to soak up the sun, mingle with other residents and best of all: snack on free food, including pizza and ice cream. STEM School Evanston partnered with Northwestern and the city to host the free ice cream social event, which featured a bouncy.
On the whole, Evanston residents live 82 years – several years longer than the national average – but that big picture number obscures major inequity. For example, residents in Evanston's historically Black Fifth Ward live 6.5 years less on average than their neighbors in the Seventh Ward. This is a result of the many disparities that exist within the Evanston community.
Evanston Public Library celebrated National Black History Month with games, events, speakers and its Evanston Black History Scavenger Hunt throughout February. The Black History indoor Scavenger Hunt highlights some of Evanston’s historical landmarks that commemorate the city’s Black history, such as Family Focus, located at 2010 Dewey Ave., and the Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center. .
