BOC seizes P5 1M-worth of shabu concealed in toy drums

MANILA- An estimated PHP5.1 million worth of methamphetamine hydrochloride commonly known as "shabu" were seized, while two claimants were arrested in a joint operation led by the Bureau of Customs-Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Thursday in Pasay City. In a statement, District Collector Carmelita Talusan said the consignee, from Cainta, Rizal, and his cohort, from San Juan City, were arrested after trying to claim the package at Central Mail Exchange Center in Pasay City at about 5:45 p.m. on June 2. The shipment was declared as "Bateria, Musical, Dulces" or set of toy drums shipped from Mexico, which arrived last May 30, 2022. Initially, it was discovered by BOC during X-ray scanning, which yielded suspicious images that prompted the Customs Examiner to subject it to 100 percent physical examination. District Collector Carmelita Talusan, in a statement, said the parcels containing 22 bearded dragons and six Argentine black and white lizards from Samutprakarn, Thailand, were discovered at the BOC-NAIA Central Mail Exchange Center (CMEC) last December. The parcels declared as children's toys were shipped by a certain 'Anuphop Wilit' and were addressed to certain individuals in Paranaque City. The parcels were subjected to x-ray and 100 percent physical examination which led to the discovery of live animals. BOC-NAIA District Collector Carmelita Talusan, in a statement on Saturday, said their PHP157,066,144 collection was a result of the strong partnership with service providers and warehouses. An estimated PHP95.42 million worth of unregistered medicines, smuggled luxury goods, and unregistered beauty products were also intercepted at the People's Air Cargo (Paircargo), designated as a Public Customs Bonded Warehouse, since 2018 to date. The BOC-NAIA also inaugurated its second X-ray machine, the latest addition to its scanning capabilities, at the warehouse in Paranaque City on November 18.
