charge of the house. but who will be the next speaker is still unclear. republican leader kevin mccarthy is holding a closed-door meeting making a last-ditch effort to get the votes. it would be the first time in 100 years speaker election will go beyond the first ballot. with us to talk about this on the phone is jake herman, founder of punch bowl news. and former congressman carlos corbello, and both of you welcome in. thank you for being here. jake is on the phone because it s a wild day on capitol hill. taiks through what will happen today. thank you for having me. we are outside of the house republican conference where kevin mccarthy is making his pitch to become speaker after 16 years after he was first sworn into the house of representatives. he is listing all the concessions he s made.
feel, even though they seem to be powerless in the situation. carlos, let s bring you back in. now that santos is set is to take office, what do republicans need to do next? they are going to use mr. santos vote whoever gets elected speaker from the republican party is going to need every single vote. so they will use his vote for that purpose. they will also use his vote to pass a rules package for the house, which isly the first vote that members take. but mr. santos being in congress, being a member of the house republican conference is not viable long-term. i think within a matter of months, he will either be expelled from the house or he will be pressured to resign. this is a major distraction for house republicans. it s extremely embarrassing. the problem they have now is that they have very votes to spare. they cannot expel santos immediately. they will let him serve for some time and then try to get rid of
nicaraguans and others who want the same freedoms of many americans. i should note we do have protests in tampa, there is a large cuban population. we appreciate gyocho in miami and former congresswoman carlos corbello, appreciate it. today in dallas, former president trump delivered the keynote address at the conservative political action conference, or cpac. he also placed first in possible presidential candidates. meanwhile, crews removed the fencing around the national capitol. a house committee to investigate that attack is still coming together. also the texas state
important place for the cuban community, and i think that s why there is such a show of support here, to let the cuban people know they are not alone, because they could definitely face a lot of backlash for these protests on the island. before we go, carlos, what do you expect in the days and weeks to come both in south florida and perhaps in cuba. i m sure the cuban government will not let this go unaddressed, but i m not sure what shape cuba is in now, if there is support for the cuban people if things have come this far. if the protests are that widespread on the island, that kind of courageous against the government, what do you expect to happen next? well, joshua, miguel dias canell, the leader that the castro family appointed when fidel castro stepped down, they
barbecue. that s the sort of thing that a republican vice president does, but also attending is the former governor of that state of south carolina, mark sanford. also a former member of congress who is now openly mulling a primary challenge against donald trump. i should tell you that sanford was shouted down and heckled by some folks at the barbecue, by sign waving of supporters of donald trump as he talked to a local reporter. you see him there. if and when sanford were to announce, he would join william weld, former congressman of massachusetts and now joe walsh who launched his own campaign yesterday. it is deeply unclear if any of these men have an actual constituency in the modern trumpist republican party, but i will say this, unlike weld, walsh is sort of a trumpian figure in his own right. he had a reputation for saying wildly offensive things while a member of congress along with promoting birtherism and other stuff. in a term that seems to signify something about the trajec
