Art Baron completely transcending, revitalizing and reimagining the music of bassist Jimmie Blanton and saxophonist Ben Webster who toiled in the Duke Ellington Orchestra, changing the face of jazz itself in the process. That particular era of Ellingtonia 1940-1942 was one of the most fertile periods for Duke, who wrote and arranged specifically for his musicians, giving them ample room to shine. Baron played in that orchestra 30 years later, both for Duke and then his son Mercer who took over the band upon the 1974 death of his dad.
Norman Provizer Share Though you didn’t find very much in the way of jazz on the delayed Grammy Awards show, it did, in its own way, serve as a strong tribute to Chick Corea who passed from the scene on February 9, 2021. The Chick from Chelsea won a Grammy for best-improvised jazz solo and a second award for best jazz instrumental album. The first was for his work on “All Blues” on the Trilogy 2 disc, while the second named that same disc (that has Brian Blade on drums and Christian McBride on bass) as the best instrumental jazz release of the year.

Ulysses Owens Jr. – “Soul Conversations”
Drummer-bandleader and educator Ulysses Owens Jr debuts his big band in his latest recording “Soul Conversations”. Owens is a much in-demand drummer who has played with Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Kurt Elling and other stellar musicians as well as leading his own ensembles. Ulysses is also a dedicated educator who assembled a 19 piece big band that performed live at Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center. The ensembles features some of Mr. Owens best students and a few excellent professional players of note with special guest, Stefon Harris on vibes. This is a special advance preview of an album due out in May.
