did get off that aircraft sail. the runway shut down and the faa says it will open an investigation into what caused all of this. and here is a live look from chicago s o hare of that plane right now. it looks a little hazy right now but you can see all of the fire trucks surrounding and the evacuation slides that were deployed and if you look to the left, hang on right there. if you look to the left you can see it looks like a perhaps a scorch mark on the back of that airplane unless that perhaps but i don t think it is. also bear in mind that air crafts like this appease to be a 737 or perhaps a little bigger but all airports carry their fuel in the wings so the proximity of the engine to the fuel in the wings could certainly have been a contributing factor to that black smoke and big fire. everybody is okay there. we ll continue to follow any developments into a possible cause and bring you the very latest here on 7 news. in the newsroom, adam williams, 7 news. anchor: a
things were so hot the wing is actually melted. now once everyone got off the plane buses arrive to bring all of passengers and crew members back to the terminal. the faa says it s launching an investigation into exactly what happened. we ll continue to update you as we learn more throughout the evening here. in the newsroom, ryan schulteis, 7 news. anchor: also today we spoke with dr. john handman junior about this crash just a few moments ago. he is an aeronautics and aeronautics engineering professor at m.i.t. and describes how this fire what happened was on takeoff they blew a tire on the right side and the tire shrapnel probably damaged both the engine and the right fuel tank. so the black smoke appears to be coming from a fuel fire. i think they will do an investigation and find out what caused the problem. was there some foreign object on the runway that caused the tire and were they dragging the tire or something? so that will come up in the investigation. ancho
