Cardinal Gibbons routs Pinecrest, returns to first title game since 2015

Southern Pines, NC The Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders swept the Pinecrest Patriots on the road on Tuesday night to advance to the 4A state championship match.
Gibbons came out of the gates dominant, as it stormed out to a 25-11 win in the first set with relative ease.
The second set ended with the same score, but started with a 4-0 run by Pinecrest, a sign that the battle-ready Patriots weren t going to go down easily.
The offensive attack made up of junior setter Celia Ryan and outside hitter and University of Delaware signee Emily Chrysogelos was effective throughout the match, and the duo was instrumental in helping the Crusaders to two lopsided set wins.
Apex Friendship stuns top-ranked Millbrook, 64-62

Raleigh, N.C. Millbrook’s girls basketball team moved into the No. 1 spot in the HighSchoolOT Top 25 rankings this week, but the Wildcats’ stay atop the east likely won’t last much longer.
Despite a fierce comeback in the second half, No. 1 Millbrook suffered its first loss of the season with a 64-62 defeat at the hands of No. 5 Apex Friendship and junior Indya Nivar.
After struggling to score in the first half, Millbrook found itself down 29-20 at halftime. That deficit grew to as many as 13 points in the third quarter, but that’s when the Wildcats began making a comeback.
Volleyball: Pinecrest holds off Broughton rally, advances to regional semifinal

Southern Pines, N.C. The Pinecrest Patriots edged the Broughton Capitals in a thrilling five-set match with a spot in the regional semifinals on the line on Thursday night.
With a limited number of fans in the stands, the Patriot players brought their own energy to the match, and it showed early on.
The hosts took the first set comfortably at 25-17 to establish a 1-0 lead in the do-or-die game.
The Patriots kept the momentum going into the second set, as they fought off the Capitals on their way to a 25-20 win to take a 2-0 lead and push Broughton to the edge.
Cardinal Gibbons advances to the 3rd round with tight sweep over Apex Friendship

The Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders managed to sweep the Apex Friendship Patriots in what was a highly competitive second round matchup. Apex Friendship entered the matchup 14-0 and Gibbons was 13-0. Gibbons won the three sets by a combined eight points.
It was clear that the teams were evenly matched from the beginning. Gibbons and Friendship traded blows early, with neither team gaining a greater than 2-point advantage through the first 40% of the opening set. Gibbons went on a run to take a 16-11 lead and force an Apex Friendship timeout. Apex Friendship came out of the break strongly and eventually took a 23-22 lead. Friendship reached a 24-23 advantage but wasn t able to find the final point to take the set. Gibbons ended on a 3-0 run to take the opening set 26-24.
