andy scholes, thank you very much. new day continues right now. good morning, everyone. to our viewers in the united states and around the world it is wednesday july 27th, i m john berman with brianna keilar. this morning a criminal investigation into the january 6th insurrection is moving closer to former president donald trump. cnn reports key witnesses subpoenaed by the justice department in recent days include two top aides of former vice president mike pence who were asked specifically about the fake electors scheme and the role of trump s lawyers. in addition the new york times and the washington post report that federal investigators in april received phone records of key officials and aides in the trump administration including chief of staff mark meadows. attorney general merrick garland called the doj s january 6th investigation the most wide ranging in its history. he says they will go where the evidence takes them. criminally charging a former presiden
ballot. that s true. but he is casting a pretty big shadow as he continues to endorse some, it s not always clear, i might add, who he is endorsing, more on that in just a moment. and the timing will be pretty interesting here. it isn t just post january 6th. it s post the first series of january 6th hearings. we ll see whether it impacted voters and which way it did. it hasn t seemed to impact the platforms, though, of candidates in several swing states. some continue to echo the baseless fraud claims and there is a whole slate of them in arizona who are running for top positions like governor and attorney general, secretary of state and senate, you know, consequential office holders for those who run elections. also closely watched, the senate race in missouri. trump has endorsed an eric. okay, but which eric did you mean to endorse, sir? rivals eric greitens and eric schmitt both claim trump meant them and trump for his part has yet to clarify, now, on election night. it s
constitution. politico reports this on the fallout of the referendum, quote, turnout soared in canas despite advisory and little else to draw democrats to the polls yet in a state where trump beat president joe biden by 15 percentage points in 2020, the amendment was failing badly in a brushback to republican legislators who are preparing to move legislation s stricting abortion, and if the politics of roe proved fruitful for republicans in kansas, it will be even more treacherous for the gop and swing more moderate swaths of the country and here s how abortion rights advocates pulled it off according to the new york times, quote, registered republicans far outnumber democrats in kansas and they made explicit appeals to unaffiliated voters and center right voters. in interviews last week in johnson county, texas, a number of voters said they were registered republicans and opposed the amendment, a dynamic that certainly played out across the state given the margin. the resu
mirror on another topic and ask ourselves what kind of country do we want to be? a long list of communities have been ravaged by a senseless mass shooting. residents of uvalde, texas, face the task of burring 21 members of their community. that includes 19 third and fourth graders. those 21 victims were killed by an 18-year-old gunman armed with an ar-15 style rifle, the same type of rifle used in the shootings in parkland and sandy hook. the shooting taking place just two days before those students summer break was going to begin. texas department of public safety spokesperson lieutenant chris olivara described how police officers had faced someone who as he puts it, had no regard for human life. the shooter was involved in a domestic disturbance with his grandmother prior to the shooting at the school. he did shoot his grandmother at that point. he then fled in a vehicle, and was in close proximity near the school when we got calls. local law enforcement at the uvalde po
