The Biden administration is closely monitoring a dispute between Canada and India over allegations that the Indian government was involved in the killing of a Sikh separatist in Canada. While publicly stating that it is a matter between the two countries, U.S. officials privately believe the allegations and are concerned that India may be adopting tactics to silence opposition figures abroad.
Dr S Jaishankar, who chaired the Parliamentary Consultative Committee on Saturday, said the decision to curtail visa services for Canadians was not permanent but conditional.
Earlier, Canadian foreign affairs minister Melanie Joly claimed that Ottawa was diplomatically engaged with New Delhi over the issue of staff reduction amid an ongoing diplomatic row between the two countries. "We are in contact with the government of India. We take Canadian diplomats safety very seriously, and we will continue to engage privately because we think that diplomatic conversations are best when they remain private," Joly had stated.
