The International Trade Centre projected that, globally, one in every five micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) will go bankrupt in 2020 an alarming number considering that, in Africa, this category of business provides nearly 80 percent of sorely needed youth employment. The pandemic is estimated to push about 40 million people in the region into extreme poverty in 2020. That kind of abrupt uptick in suffering has not been seen in Africa since the 1980s.

Quinte region now has over 100 active COVID-19 cases

The Quinte region has broke another pandemic record, in the first day of the third province-wide shutdown. Hastings Prince Edward Public Health reported 22 new COVID-19 cases today. That brings the total of active cases to 107, a number that has not been seen since the start of the pandemic. Staff note that three people are now in hospital, with two in ICU. A total of four outbreaks have been identified: 1 case connected to a workplace in Quinte West 3 cases connected to a workplace in Trenton 5 cases connected to a workplace in Belleville. 4 cases connected to a school/child care facility. Health unit has not identified the specific place.

Here is the full statement from health officials: Hastings Prince Edward Public Health (HPEPH) has been informed that an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19 visited the Duke Pub (Belleville) while contagious for the virus.  Any individuals who were at The Duke Pub on the afternoon/evening of April 2, 2021 are: Currently considered to be high risk contacts of the case. Advised to self-isolate immediately, leaving only for the purpose of testing.

Individuals who visited the Duke Pub between Tuesday, March 30 – and Thursday, April 1 are encouraged to seek testing for COVID-19 immediately, even if asymptomatic.
