The Last Campaign of Lt Howard Cushing - True West Magazine

True West Magazine LT HOWARD CUSHING There were many brave officers in the Frontier Army during the darkest days of the Apache campaigns in the late 1860s and early 1870s but none braver than Lieutenant Howard Cushing. He was a member of one of America’s most famous family of war heroes that included brothers, Milton Jr., Alonzo and John Cushing. Their father, Dr. Milton Cushing Sr. received his medical degree and settled in Zanesville, Ohio where he married his first wife Abigail. They had four children. She died in 1833. Three years later he married Mary Smith and they would have five children, Milton Jr., Howard, Alonzo, John and Mary. He died of tuberculosis in 1847 leaving her penniless and nine children to raise. Abigail’s children were nearly grown. Eventually Milton Jr. and Howard would take jobs to help support the family. When war came in 1861, all of Mary’s four boys joined the Union cause. Mary would outlive all her four sons.

Robert Fred Muir - The Suffolk Times

Robert Fred Muir 1924-2021 We mourn the loss of our dear father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Robert “Bob” Muir on Feb. 14, 2021. After the passing of his wife, Nancy Y. Muir, in December 2020, we are sure that he is now enjoying this Valentine’s Day with his Valentine. Bob was born to Fred and Ella Muir on Sept. 22, 1924, in Mechanicville, NY. Bob and his sister, Luella, grew up in Mechanicville, north of Albany, and as they were 18 months apart in age, they were very close. Bob’s family enjoyed summer vacations at Lake George, and Bob cultivated a newspaper route near his home. After graduating Mechanicville High School at 16 years of age, he attended a business school in Troy, N.Y.

Our 1918 Pandemic – D | News, Sports, Jobs - Marshall Independent

Prairie Lives We have been learning about the regional impact of the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic, guided in exploring its origins and extent by John M. Barry’s pandemic history, “The Great Influenza.” The outbreak originated in southwest Kansas in early 1918; spread to the Army training center at Camp Funston in eastern Kansas; and Camp Funston troops brought it to camps around the US. The influenza eventually reached the training center at Camp Dodge, Iowa where young men drafted from our area received their initial training. The outbreak of spring 1918 touched our region on April 3, 1918, when Marshall’s Walter Bedore died of pneumonia while in training at Camp Dodge.
