it, students, friends and parents wonder why anyone would want to. richard reeve of our afit yal wjla shows us how betts had been a positive influence on so many young lives. reporter: crime tape and a bouquet of flowers now mark the home of principal brian betts as a murder scene. terry mullen and her family knew little about the case until his stolen nissan suv was discovered in a parking lot. he told me three young guys got out of it earlier that day. and that he didn t ask any questions because, you know, this neighborhood you just don t ask questions. reporter: betts, 42 years ago, the principal of shaw middle school, was found shot to death thursday night in a bedroom of his silver spring home. they strongly believe this is not a random event. there were no signs of forced entry to the home. reporter: authorities say the front door was unlocked, that
unfortunate remark about possibly having a shoe bomb. and that is what led to this incredible series of event this is afternoon as they try to figure out what s going on. i can tell you, having travelled with the federal air marshalls one time, one thing they take their eye on is what s going on with the restrooms, because there s always fear someone could hide something in there. there s concerns something could be assembled in a restroom. they monitor quite carefully the traffic in and out, and how long someone lingers when they re there. anderson. it s an indication of at least on this flight, that there were air marshalls assigned that the program is in place, and in this case, at least, they were on the front line right there. absolutely, anderson. and furthermore, there s an indication the plane was clearly communicating back to the tower
