Even after 45 years in business, expansive Maryland winery finds plenty of ways to keep growing

One of the region’s oldest wineries still in operation is Linganore Winecellars, tucked away on one of the rolling hills on the outskirts of Mount Airy and 4.5 miles northeast of historic New Market, Maryland.
It will take about an hour and 45 minutes to drive there from Harrisburg and less than an hour from Baltimore.
Linganore celebrated its 45nd birthday on March 25, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find many others on the East Coast that have deeper roots.

The Fabbioli winery story starts in 1987 when Doug Fabbioli and Colleen Berg moved to California with the idea that they could find some land and plant some grapevines.
Ten years later, when that idea didn’t bear fruit, they headed back East, according to the history on the Fabbioli Cellars website.
It was early in 2000 when Berg found an available 25-acre parcel just north of Leesburg in Loudoun County. By 2001, they were planting Merlot and Petit Verdot grapes there.

The 2020 vintage of Sprit was released in mid-November. It is the perfect complement to the dog days of summer, and to the warmer temps of the spring and fall.

Boordy Vineyards in Hydes, Baltimore County, is producing a Landmark series of high-quality dry wines that are largely sourced from its South Mountain Vineyard in Washington County.
One exception in the series is a less distinguished and quite affordable wine with a simple name of Spritz that already in its second year is proving to be a customer favorite.

The Pennsylvania Wine Society (PWS), based in Harrisburg, has since 2003 started its year with Wine Excellence, a competition that only wineries in the state can enter.
Largely a contest of the best dry wines made from vinifera grapes, the PWS has expanded the contest’s criteria to include wines made from several hybrid grapes and ice wines. One made by Mazza Vineyards won Wine Excellence XVIII, announced in late January at Hilton Harrisburg. It was the first time an ice wine ever won the award.
