Cabarrus County s Adopt a Senior group keeps spreading positivity to community

The 2021 Cabarrus County Adopt a Senior event will be extended another week, through May 23. Matt Riggins, a teacher and coach at Mount Pleasant High School, started Adopt a Senior in Cabarrus County last year, and it has grown into something he wasn’t quite expecting. “I saw someone else doing (this) last year in another county and basically copied it because I thought it was a pretty cool idea,” he said in a phone interview Friday. He continued: “I thought it was just kind of a nice way to spread some positivity and to do some nice things because last year’s seniors and this year’s seniors as well have kind of missed out on some of the traditional high school benchmarks. Like prom and last year’s graduation being a big difference and partial virtual school and all this kind of stuff, so I just thought it was kind of cool to try to do something nice for them, and it kind of took on a life of its own.”

Pandemic brought out the best in teachers and school staff - thank you

From The Cabarrus County Education Foundation Board As we come to the end of 2020, we have gained a new perspective, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, on the essential work that our educators and staff members perform in our schools each day of the school year. This fall has presented numerous challenges to our educational system, and the Cabarrus County Education Foundation Board would like to thank the approximately 4,264 Cabarrus County School employees for their unwavering commitment to support student achievement. We have watched as our district has navigated remote and hybrid learning for over 22,000 CCS students. During this time, our educators have been flexible and resilient as they embraced new roles and accepted additional responsibilities. All have stepped up to allow students to continue on their pathway in a myriad of ways and we recognize them:
