SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Savannah Housing Authority is looking into asking federal officials for permission to demolish one of the city’s biggest and oldest low-income housing developments.
The Housing Authority of Savannah says they got an assessment done on the property, and that survey found that it would take $40 million to bring Yamacraw Village up to current affordable housing standards. The executive director says that makes it eligible for HUD to consider demolishing it.
Yamacraw Village was built 1940. It is the Housing Authority of Savannah’s oldest property in their portfolio. They say in the last 80 years housing needs and standards have changed.

Mance, along with dozens of people, came out to Forsyth Park on Sunday for a vigil to mourn Daunte Wright, Adam Toledo, Ma’Khia Bryant and others who died at the hands of police.
“Technology, social media, the law techniques we are so advanced in every other area of our society that there is absolutely no reason that Black and Brown people should meet the end of their lives when they encounter law enforcement,” said Shalena Cook Jones, the Chatham County District Attorney.

Residents of District 2 who live in the area of the park voiced their concerns about safety, preservation, and more.
“Forsyth is actually the center of the second district and I think moving forward, we have an opportunity right now to see what this park is going to look like, give our input on what we’d like to see in the park, and how the park should be best utilized,” said District 2 Alderman Detric Leggett.
