the left side of the driver s car hit a concrete barrier in the median strip, and then according to an eyewitness the driver appeared to overcompensa overcompensate, make a sharp right turn, hit a curb on the far side of the road, and then went over that railing and over an overpass. she sailed about 60 feet into the air, and then about the same distance down before coming to rest upside down. all the passengers inside were dead on arrival. police do say all of them were wearing seat belts. but obviously that was not enough to save them in this horrific accident. i know you said that the vehicle hit that concrete barrier, and so that leaves the impression that that sort of caused the car to sort of go into that spin. any sign, any witnesses saying that the vehicle was acting sort of an erratic fashion, driving in an erratic fashion before that? reporter: there doesn t seem to be any indication of that so far. what police are hearing is that the car appeared to be speeding
why hasn t the u.s.? we simply don t know who these rebels are. now officials say they actually do know quite a bit but they are not ready at this point to grant formal recognition. reporter: fresh from seeing wounded rebels at a hospital in their defacto capital of benghazi, republican senator john mccain urges the u.s. do everything it can to help them. they want to be recognized as the french and the italians recognize them. reporter: france, italy and qatar have officially recognized the transitional national council as a legitimate representative of the libyan people. even though the rebels control only the eastern part of the country. but the obama administration is holding off, as secretary of state hillary clinton puts it, buying time, buying space. hoping the rag tag band of rebels can unite and strengthen to defeat forces royal to libyan leader moammar gadhafi. we are going to stay with it and see how the opposition is able to take advantage of the
direction we think they are moving in, we have seen some positive signals. reporter: recognizing the rebels, a senior official tells cnn, raises serious issues it would acknowledge that libya is now a divide country and cot u.s. be sure the group represents the whole opposition movement? it s a bit early, this official says, maybe they turn out not to be the right folks. but secretary clinton knows the timing is urgent. what nato is doing is buying time, buying space. reporter: so far the u.s. is providing what s called nonlethal humanitarian aid. the administration hasn t yet decided to arm them or provide financial assistance. but a senior u.s. official tells cnn there is a lot the united states could be doing right now without going so far as to recognize the rebels, pointing out that the u.s. funds political groups and other organizations around the world. but this official says you want to be careful about who they are. so, so far, caution seems to be
