people dead here. four adults, three children, including an infant. and an elderly couple. we don t know what the relation is. but two of them in their 80s. a law enforcement official tells me that the driver of the suv appears to be one of the women who was inside the car. we know that one was aged 45, and the other was 30. they said that the suv was traveling at a very high rate of speed on the bronx river expressway, parkway, and for some reason, they don t know why at this point, it hit a barrier and went flying over the overpass, about 50 to 60 feet into the air. and the same distance down before it came crashing down in the very heavily brush area of the southeast perimeter of the bronx zoo. we re standing at the one of the side entrances right now. not near any of the animal exhibits or any of the investigate tors, totally out of the public view. this suv was crushed. it landed upside down. and all the people inside were pronounced dead at the scene. because it lande
the left side of the driver s car hit a concrete barrier in the median strip, and then according to an eyewitness the driver appeared to overcompensa overcompensate, make a sharp right turn, hit a curb on the far side of the road, and then went over that railing and over an overpass. she sailed about 60 feet into the air, and then about the same distance down before coming to rest upside down. all the passengers inside were dead on arrival. police do say all of them were wearing seat belts. but obviously that was not enough to save them in this horrific accident. i know you said that the vehicle hit that concrete barrier, and so that leaves the impression that that sort of caused the car to sort of go into that spin. any sign, any witnesses saying that the vehicle was acting sort of an erratic fashion, driving in an erratic fashion before that? reporter: there doesn t seem to be any indication of that so far. what police are hearing is that the car appeared to be speeding
off an overpass on to a transit facility near the bronx zoo. three of the dead are children. cnn s susan candiotti joins me now by the phone. susan, what s the latest on this? reporter: well, it s a terrible, terrible accident, certainly, alison, but we re hearing from the police that it s either a car or a van with four adults and three children inside, all dead. they were on an expressway called the bronx river parkway, and the car crossed over the median into the opposing lanes of traffic, flipped over the bridge, and fell a sizable number of feet. we don t know how far, but it was quite a big drop. no one survived. no one sooiurvived. now, where this happened. it fell over just inside the southeast perimeter of the bronx zoo, which is huge. 265 acres. but it happened according to a spokesperson for the zoo, far away from any public area, not near any animals nor exhibits, nor did it affect any visitors. in fact, i m told that if you re a visitor in the zoo, you would no
