MONTPELIER â The annual First Day Hikes will be done a little differently this year, according to the State Parks department. The hikes started seven years ago with two purposes in mind, said Rochelle Skinner, park sales and service manager at the Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. âIt was something other states had started as a healthy alternative to the crazy revelry of New Yearâs Eve, and so we thought it was a great idea,â she said. âAnd we wanted to share with people that parks were open for their use even in the middle of winter, so that was another reason for wanting to do that.â

Quechee Loop Trail | 1.5 miles roundtrip| Quechee State Park in Quechee, VT Southwest Region Button Bay Point Trail | 0.8-mile roundtrip | Button Bay State Park in Ferrisburgh, VT Northwest Region Marsh Brook Nature Trail | 1.5-mile roundtrip loop | Lake Carmi State Park in Enosburg Falls, VT Northeast Region Shore Trail | 1.5+ mile roundtrip | Brighton State Park in Island Pond, VT Please dress for the weather and bring snowshoes if the snow is deep. Please also bring beverages and snacks. On-leash dogs are welcome unless otherwise noted. Pre-registration is not required and hikers can simply show up whenever they’d like.
