The region also lags behind the nation in the percentage of adults with at least one shot and in adults who are fully vaccinated, an Enquirer analysis of U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention data shows. Roughly 3 of 5 adults in the region have had one COVID-19 vaccine shot. That s 967,000 of the 1.7 million adults in the 16 counties.
In addition, the region s path to reaching the herd protection that will block wide transmission of the novel coronavirus looks to be difficult, leaving the area with pockets of vulnerability. The reason: vaccine hesitancy, while continuing to drop in 2021 as people have become more familiar with the COVID-19 shots, remains above 20% in many areas.

Fairfield High School in Butler County will host a pop-up COVID-19 vaccination clinic on Tuesday, according to a release from Fairfield City Schools.
Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be available at the site, which is open to the public. Officials said students ages 12-17 who are in sports or clubs are especially encouraged to sign up.
The Pfizer vaccine, which is the only COVID-19 vaccine currently approved for children under the age of 18, was hard to come by in Butler County earlier this spring. The Butler County General Health District only received Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines until May 20, when officials said the first shipment of Pfizer was delivered to their department.
Butler County Health officials are asking residents to participate in a second COVID-19 survey.
“The local health officials in our region are once again sponsoring [it],” said Keri Korthals Director of Butler County Emergency Management. “This is a follow-up to the survey that was conducted in partnership with KU Med at the end of last year.”
One of its primary purposes of the survey is to gather information from individuals who have not been vaccinated. Researchers are gathering insights of those individuals regarding their thoughts and concerns about the vaccine. As well as to identify potential barriers to receiving the vaccine.
