EVELETH â Hours after bar, restaurant and salon owners from throughout the Iron Range met Tuesday to discuss the impacts of COVID-19 on their businesses, the Eveleth City Council said it would not enforce executive orders blocking those businesses from opening.
Councilors unanimously passed a resolution declaring Eveleth a âConstitutional and Business Friendly Communityâ and said city resources wonât be used to force businesses to comply with Gov. Tim Walzâs stay-safe order that went into effect Monday, which allows retailers to open at limited capacity, but keeps bars and restaurants closed to dine-in services.
Walz is expected to announce a plan Wednesday that will allow those businesses to reopen under certain guidelines, but the Eveleth resolution approved Tuesday means the city and its police department would effectively step aside and let the cityâs businesses operate as they feel.
Letter: Thanks for sound judgment of Becker County commissioners
Becker County should not encourage illegal activity as an official policy. It is unethical and problematic for taxpayers.

To the editor:
Becker County taxpayers owe a debt of gratitude to County Commissioners Barry Nelson, John Okeson, and Don Skarie. They are protecting us by exercising sound judgment.
Earlier this year, The Becker County Board of Commissioners passed resolution 06-20-1E, titled “Constitutional and Business Friendly Community.” Support for local business is intended by the resolution but there are unintended consequences. The resolution encourages on-sale liquor establishments to engage in activity which is in contravention of state emergency executive orders. Each alcohol sale becomes an illegal sale. A business acting on encouragement by the resolution, potentially, may lose their liquor license
Full house as business owners urge Becker County commissioners to keep controversial resolution
“I warn you, if businesses are outlawed any longer, if people who choose to open their businesses in the model that provides enough revenue for them, continue to be seen as criminals, we will have an emergency,” said a woman at the Becker County Board meeting.

Becker County acted to amend a controversial resolution by removing a paragraph considered most likely to make the county liable for civil court damages.
