Back to school already? Year-round calendar begins for Houston area ‘pilot’ campuses

Longer school year for some students
HOUSTON – The 2021-2022 school year has already started at some Houston area schools that are piloting what TEA calls the Additional Days School Year or ADSY.
State lawmakers approved the voluntary incentive program before the pandemic, in 2019, which offers extra funds to schools that add 30 additional instruction days to the calendar.
“Normally, we do 180 days. Now it’s 210 days,” said Ermel Elementary principal Erik Torres. “Those 210 days provide us more opportunity to serve the kids and help them grow.”
The research highlighted on TEA’s website (from Boston Consulting Group) shows that most students’ learning “slides,” especially for low-income students, during the long summer break.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) When school started this fall, Ana Troya got a list of 105 Alief Independent School District students who hadn t showed up to Bush Elementary School.
She spent day after day driving around town trying to track down those students, each one of them worth about $5,500 in state funding for the district. We found a lot had moved and we assume it s because they either couldn t pay rent or they [found] job opportunities elsewhere, said Troya, a student support specialist at Communities In Schools. From the families we did get to see, they were struggling financially.

Some may forget that the original plan for Travis Elementary in Midland – one of the worst-performing campuses in the state – was to turn it over to an Arizona-based charter operator.
Midland ISD, however, couldn’t close a deal with Legacy Traditional Schools. I believe this will be one of the most significant moments in the academic turnaround of education in Midland when we look back in five to 10 years.
Ultimately, Midland ISD went with IDEA Public Schools, something I admittedly have been excited about since the announcement was made. Midland ISD needed someone with a record of success to be that partner at Travis, and IDEA has that record.
