A Burrillville police officer has been charged with illegal possession of fireworks in the wake of a July 4 incident at Spring Lake, the department announced Friday.
Lt. Jason Cahill has been on administrative duty since the incident, a statement from Police Chief Col. Steven Lynch said. Cahill pleaded nolo contendre on Friday to the charge of illegal fireworks possession.
Cahill had also faced charges over the illegal use of fireworks, which were dropped. Both charges were brought by the state fire marshal s office.
A spokesman for the Burrillville Police Department declined to share any details about the incident that led to the charges. However, the community news outlet NRI NOW reported earlier this month that an unidentified off-duty Burrillville police officer had been involved in a July 4 fireworks incident at Spring Lake that resulted in one man going to the hospital with minor injuries.

GLOCESTER – When now-retired Glocester Police Officer Kimberly Bertholic was growing up, there weren’t many female police officer role models, so the 20-year officer said she paved the way herself.
Bertholic recently retired as the department’s first and only female police officer. A Glocester native, she said she wanted to be a public servant, someone who helped others, for as long as she could remember.
“I knew when I was a little kid I wanted to be a police officer. I was very interested in public safety. When I started, there were not a lot of departments that would hire women,” she said.
BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (WLNE) – Burrillville police are investigating a fatal crash that killed a Massachusetts man on Sunday.
Burrillville Chief of Police Colonel Stephen Lynch said officers responded to the sand pits area of Munyon Trail in Burrillville for a report of a Jeep that had crashed.
Police found a 2008 Jeep owned and operated by 19-year-old Anthony Pollini of Rockland, Massachusetts, had driven through an off-road sand hill in the area.
Burrillville police said one of the two adult passengers fell from the Jeep when it rolled over on the hill. This passenger, now identified as 29-year-old Jose Zuniga also from Massachusetts, sustained serious injuries from the fall and the rollover.
