yesterday. so it sounds like how is the electric grid doing to keep up command. you don t have power. how is the rest of the community doing? it s not really a demand issue. but there are over 20,000 without power in the city of buffalo. with the harsh weather conditions we re seeing, very difficult to get that power restored. bucket trucks certainly can t go up safely. drifting and blowing snow, it is a very difficult situation for the power company to restore power at this time. we have gotten calls for people on ventilators, people who have oxygen. we tried to work with police skp tpaand fire in getting those people
leading us off tonight, she s in pinehurst, north carolina. reporter: with an army of bucket trucks racing to restore power, tonight, federal, state, and local authorities in moore county, north carolina, are hunting for suspects, after what they re calling an intentional, willful, and malicious attack on the power supply. early evidence suggests that it was deliberate and the investigation is underway. reporter: authorities say the suspect or suspects drove up to two power substations saturday night and opened fire, knocking out power to 45,000 customers. it s been a nightmare. reporter: moore county sheriff ronnie fields says whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing. what s been done here could cause the death of individuals, so and that s how serious it is. a st emergopening a ls decri shelter as temperatures we used all of our sanitation and everything today. being without water is worse than not having lights or anything.
10 stories up. it s crazy. i ve never seen anything like it. it looks like a scene out of a movie. reporter: emergency crews worked through the night, not only making sure the power was off but securing the plane so it did not fall during the rescue operation. number one priority is getting the bucket trucks up and getting the bonding and grounding secured and the plane secured. reporter: they managed to get them down after seven hours, took them to the hospital suffering from hypothermia. it departed from westchester county airport in new york sunday, before crashing into power lines near gaithersburg, maryland. it s not clear what caused the crash. but foggy conditions in the area hampered the rescue operation. i did see see the pilot waving his hand up and down to signal there is somebody in there that s alive. reporter: the pilot,
