Amid the growing clamour for cancellation of CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has proposed to conduct the CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021 only for major subjects.
It is to be noted that a total of 174 subjects are offered by the CBSE to Class 12 students, of which about 20 are considered major by the CBSE. These include: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, History, Political Science, Business Studies, Accountancy, Geography, Economics, and English.
A Class 12 student of CBSE is allowed to select a minimum of five and a maximum of six subjects. Of these, four subjects are usually treated as major subjects by the CBSE.

Notably, almost all the State Education Boards, CBSE and ICSE have postponed their Class XII examinations, 2021 due to rising COVID-19 cases.

Amid the growing demand for cancellation of CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021 due to the rising coronavirus COVID-19 cases in the country, the Centre is scheduled to hold a high-level meeting on Sunday (May 23) to a final decision on the call on the fate of CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021 and ICSE Class 12th Board Exams. During the meeting, the fate of entrance examinations for professional courses like NEET, JEE Main will also be discussed.

A high-level meeting was chaired by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday, to discuss the conduct of CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021 and entrance examinations for professional courses including JEE Main, JEE Advanced, and NEET.
Reports suggest that the meeting is over without any consensus. No final decision regarding the conduct of Class 12 board exams has been taken yet.
The government had proposed two options – one to hold exams for only limited subjects and two to hold exams for all subjects but reduce the time for each exam from 3 hours to 1.5 hours and change questions to MCQ and short questions type only.

Even though students and parents are demanding the cancellation of CBSE Class 12 Board exams 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, several reports are indicating that the schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) are planning to hold another set of online practice tests.
This is indicative of the fact that the CBSE could actually conduct the Class 12 Board exams 2021 at a later date. However, any decision on this will be taken only after the Coronavirus situation in the country is reviewed on June 1.
