Bounce Back group pulling out all the stop to clean up Stokesley

THE Stokesley Bounce Back Working Group was busy at the weekend cleaning the hundreds of signs in the town, from street names to traffic and information signs. Many had become green, mossy and dirty and were invisible to motorists and to the many delivery drivers. The bounce back group is hoping that as lockdown eases more visitors will be attracted to the town, so this project will also help to spruce it up and perhaps attract more footfall. Following discussions with North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC), who confirmed they hadn t the resources for the cleaning, they gave the group the go-ahead, so Stokesley Town Council not only did the work themselves, but also funded it.

Letters to the editor: Minister putting the cart before the horse on North Yorkshire council shake-up

Unitary consultation ROBERT JENRICK has announced an eight-week consultation period on two alternative, conflicting proposals to bring North Yorkshire under a unitary status – the so-called East/West split creating two unitaries, or the single North Yorkshire unitary. He claims that he has always been clear that any restructuring of local government must be locally-led and will not involve top-down solutions from government. However, this is not the case. He is not asking the residents of North Yorkshire whether they want to change to a unitary status. On the contrary, he is telling us we will be having a unitary system and asking which option is preferred by businesses, local services and residents.

Letters to the editor: Frightening speeds on the A684 near Leyburn

Speeding drivers I FEEL the time has come to raise the subject of the total disregard of the speed limit on the A684, particularly through Harmby towards Leyburn. Since I moved here two years ago I have become aware of how many vehicles ignore the speed limit, which is 40mph at Harmby reducing to 30mph going towards Leyburn. I witness, on a daily basis, the many HGVs of all sizes, which are in a large part, from local companies hurtling along this stretch of road. Local agricultural vehicles are also guilty, as are car drivers and motorbikes. The section of road around the Pheasant public house, at the top of Harmby Bank, narrows down quite substantially and I feel it will only be a matter of time before a serious accident happens.
