Good Friday morning from Memphis, where the eighth-seeded Grizzlies will face off tomorrow against the top-seeded Utah Jazz in Game 3 of the 2021 NBA playoffs. And if you re planning to party on Beale Street before or after, be aware that there will be a $5 security fee to enter the street. More on both of those in a sec, but first.
Many things in life get better with age, but it s safe to say bridges aren t one of them.
Normally, the Memphis area has two, aging bridges across the Mississippi River: the Interstate 40 bridge, which turns 48 this year, and the I-55 bridge, which turns 72. But a fractured beam has taken the I-40 bridge out of commission indefinitely, revealing just how vulnerable our infrastructure is and how dependent we are on it. The good news is, a timeline for repairs could be coming next week, our Sam Hardiman reports.
Good morning Memphis, where the Grizzlies beat Mike Conley
and the Utah Jazz to open the first round of the NBA Playoffs and golf fans are in awe as Phil Mickelson became the oldest man to win a major golf championship.
But first, with the Hernando de Soto bridge still closed and additional evidence shows the crack might have existed as early as 2016, the question of accountability remains.
Frazier said it was unsafe to run the under-bridge unit which is why the crack was missed. The Commercial Appeal obtained the records of his firing through a public records request.
And in this column, also for subscribers, our Tonyaa Weathersbee looks at the potential disaster that might have happened had the crack resulted in a catastrophic failure as happened in 2007 when a bridge crossing the Mississippi River in Minneapolis failed, killing 13 and injuring 145.

“In every public debate, a moment occurs that shifts the tide. Rep. Newhouse’s comments at the Andrus Center conference created that moment for supporters of a clean, equitable energy future for the Pacific Northwest.”
