SPRINGFIELD State grants totaling $1.25 million will help environmental cleanup at five sites around the state, a step towards making the properties available for housing and other economic development.
One of the $250,000 grants will go toward cleanup at 846 and 876 Bay St. in Springfield, a 7.3-acre former auto salvage and scrapyard. Northern Tree Service last year received City Council approval to use the property for a wood-waste processing facility.
The money comes from MassDevelopment’s Brownfields Redevelopment Fund. The fund supports environmental assessment and cleanup of underutilized or abandoned properties in “economically distressed” areas of the state.
