On a summer evening two years ago, the Washington Club threw a going-away party for itself at Patterson House, its ornate white-marble sugar cake of a mansion on Dupont Circle. Guests sipped cocktails in the massive ballroom before filing into.
BROCKTON The city has received a $250,000 state grant to remove toxic materials from the vacant downtown Corcoran Supply Company property, which officials say is the first step toward redeveloping the property into downtown housing.
The Corcoran Supply Company is a three-story, 65,000-square-foot building located on 1.2 acres of downtown property at 308 Montello St.
The property is considered a brownfield and the grand funds will be used to assess and remediate issues related to fuel storage tanks, contaminated soil, asbestos and lead paint, which have all made the site unfit for use. Removing these pollutants will clear the way for the property to be developed into 62 new units of workforce and affordable housing for the city, Mayor Robert Sullivan s office said in a statement.

SPRINGFIELD State grants totaling $1.25 million will help environmental cleanup at five sites around the state, a step towards making the properties available for housing and other economic development.
One of the $250,000 grants will go toward cleanup at 846 and 876 Bay St. in Springfield, a 7.3-acre former auto salvage and scrapyard. Northern Tree Service last year received City Council approval to use the property for a wood-waste processing facility.
The money comes from MassDevelopment’s Brownfields Redevelopment Fund. The fund supports environmental assessment and cleanup of underutilized or abandoned properties in “economically distressed” areas of the state.
