Killeen council candidates weigh in on assistant city manager hiring

The Killeen City Council tonight will consider approval of naming current Public Works Director Danielle Singh as the city’s new assistant city manager.  Singh s name is being put forward by City Manager Kent Cagle, following a nationwide search in which the city received 59 applications and conducted six interviews with candidates for the job that was advertised with a salary in the $160,000 range. The vote could take place as early as tonight during the Killeen City Council meeting. While Killeen Mayor Jose Segarra said the job search for a replacement of former Assistant City Manager David Ellison was transparent and by the book, some of the current councilmembers expressed concern, saying they were not kept in the loop regarding the progress of the search.

Donations to help Killeen ISD with literacy efforts

Two Killeen area leaders recently provided a special donation of customized student-written books and a grant to enhance literacy efforts throughout Killeen ISD schools. Brockley Moore, a longtime supporter of the school district, presented a $3,000 donation to the school district through the Seen and Unseen Hands organization. Those funds will assist reading and writing literacy efforts as needed. Another Killeen resident, Kris Price, donated 320 books, most with a personal touch. Her new literacy program features books written by local students. The books are meant to encourage children. They promote character building and ideals such as setting goals and considering career options.

Filings show candidates ready to go for another election

That’s apparently not the case — at least from the viewpoint of local candidates. As the filing period closed Friday for the upcoming May 1 municipal and school board elections, all eight races in the Killeen area are contested. Moreover, the three local elections — Killeen City Council, Killeen ISD school board and Harker Heights City Council had drawn a total of 25 candidates for eight seats. Six of those candidates are seeking a single seat — District 1 on the Killeen City Council. With incumbent Shirley Fleming finishing her third term and ineligible to seek reelection because of charter restrictions, a half-dozen hopefuls are campaigning for the seat.
