Although state transportation officials say the two drawbridges over the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal open 12 times a year on average, actually being there when it occurs is rare.
City of Rehoboth Beach officials sent out an email that Delaware Department of Transportation had notified them about a request made to raise the Rehoboth and Lewes canal bridges between 2 and 4 p.m., May 6. DelDOT staff are responsible for maintenance and operation of the bridges.
Citing lack of progress on various wastewater-related cleanup issues, the state of Delaware has struck an agreement with Allen Harim Foods that orders the chicken processing company to fix ongoing threats to human and environmental health at its Millsboro and Harbeson plants.
The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control announced the signing of a conciliation order Tuesday that requires the company to reduce its wastewater discharges, improve its stormwater systems and to stop discharging into nearby rivers and streams.

Observations: The last week of March brought typical coastal whipsaw weather. High that week was 86 degrees. Low was 34. On the whole, warmer than average. Average temperature for the last week in March in Sussex County is 47 degrees. This year the average was 62 degrees.
Rainfall? Amazingly average in March but still wet overall for 2021. According to AccuWeather statistics, March brought us a total of 4.35 inches of rain. Normal for March is 4.36 inches. For the year, though, we’re about two inches of rain above normal. Call that February. So far in Sussex we’ve felt 13.13 inches of rain compared to the normal average of 10.99 inches at this point of the year.
