Recognizing efforts to protect children

LIMA Allen County’s commissioners took a moment morning to thank the people who work with children who’ve been abused.
The commissioners offered a proclamation recognizing April as Child Abuse and Prevention Month, recognizing the public and private organizations that help protect children.
“I applaud the efforts you put in daily, with the social work you do that sometimes goes very unnoticed and unthanked,” Commissioner Brian Winegardner said.
Allen County spends $392K to replace radios

LIMA Allen County will see an upgrade to its communications equipment for law enforcement, and it has COVID-19 to thank.
The Allen County commissioners approved spending $392,599 in CARES Act funding to purchase Motorola radio communication equipment from Motorola Solutions. The replacement portable radios will replace those in the Juvenile Detention Center, dog warden’s office, Allen County Emergency Management Agency and the Allen County Sheriff’s Office.
“This is much-needed,” said Allen County Commissioner Brian Winegardner, who worked in the sheriff’s office before becoming a commissioner. “The current radios are at end of their life, so the timing couldn’t be better for this.”

A Little Night of Music, a pay-per-view Friday night show that drew an enthusiastic response from music lovers throughout its market. Taking place at the historic Miller Theatre in downtown Augusta, the livestream performance followed strict social distancing guideless. A very limited crowd was allowed to buy tickets for the performance in the spacious venue; and there was no intermission during the show to minimize contact. The orchestra itself was reimagined to include a smaller number of musicians on stage, led by music director Dirk Meyer, and featuring principal violinist Anastasia Petrunina, oboist Brian Lyons, and trumpeter Brian Winegardner.

LIMA The coronavirus pandemic forced everyone to adapt in 2020. But what will 2021 look like? And are local leaders prepared for the next round of challenges?
The Lima News reached out to the newest of the county’s elected officials to get their views on what next year will bring.
City of Lima
Two candidates for Lima City Council ended up replacing incumbents in 2020. After tight races in 2019, Peggy Ehora and Tony Wilkerson jumped into their new roles last January, and while their desks in city council chambers have been ready for them, they haven’t spent much time there. Instead, governing in 2020 has consisted primarily of online appearances.
