nsaptioning sponsored by cbs this is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. pelley: good evening, the gs. is scrambling tonight to condemn a video that appears to show marines desecrating bodies in afghanistan, possibly the bodies of taliban fighters. the video was shot months ago, but it was posted on the nternet yesterday and now word of it is spreading in istaanistan. secretary of defense leon panetta said the behavior depicted in the video is utterly deplorable. here is david martin at the thntagon. didn orter: it didn t take long to identify the marines in the e deo. it could take forever to undo dhe damage. thcretary of defense panetta called afghan president karzai this morning to promise a full investigation and other senior officials including the chairman of the joint chiefs, secretary of the navy, commandant of the marine corps, even the secretary of state joined in a chorus of denunciation. i join him in condemning the deplorable behavior that is reflecte
reporter: the four marines who appear to be urinating on dead bodies are members of a sniper team. that s a sniper rifle one of them is holding. these photos show snipers from the same battalion though not necessarily the same team last summer in afghanistan. the 1,000-man battalion lost seven men killed in action and is now back home at camp lejeune, north carolina, where more than just the four who showed their faces could be liable to criminal charges. anyone anyone found to have participated or known about it, having engaged in such conduct must be held fully accountable. reporter: the naval criminal investigative service, n.c.i.s., has been called in with orders to investigate every aspect of the video. that includes not just the urinating a violation of the law of war against desecrating bodies but whether the dead man are really taliban fighters or just local farmers. and why snipers who kill from long range are standing over the bodies. the taliban, of cou
