Inaugural 5k honors Louisville photographer Tyler Gerth 1-year after his death

Hundreds of bikers, runners, and walkers took part in the inaugural Tyler Gerth Memorial 5k at Waterfront Park. The 27-year-old photographer was killed when a man opened fire at Jefferson Square Park during the first weeks of the Breonna Taylor protests. Sunday marks a year since his death. He had become a fixture documenting every moment of the social justice movement. Just days after his death, Gerth s family knew they wanted to find a meaningful way for his memory to live on. We all came together as a family and realized that we needed to have purpose out of his death, that there had to be a meaning behind it, said Gerth s sister Tiffany Hensley.Gerth s two sisters launched Building Equal Bridges: The Tyler Gerth Foundation. It aims to continue Gerth s social justice work through scholarships, education, and community collaboration. There have been so many words or phrases in 2020, which we had never heard before, or whose use has taken on a new significance, that now eerily represent the year we’ve just experienced with just their mention.  These are the words or phrases that stand out to me as I review 2020 in my mind from the beginning to almost the end of the year: Australian Bush Fires.
