ORANGE The town’s Third Thursday Street Fairs are returning this summer, having been canceled last year due to the raging COVID-19 pandemic.
The monthly events, sponsored by the Orange Merchants Group, were first held three years ago to allow small businesses the opportunity to make themselves more visible and to engage the public about the importance of shopping locally. Each fair consists of vendor booths sent up in a cordoned-off section of the downtown area, from the main-streets intersection to Depot Street. There are also musicians in Memorial Park and the South Main Street parking lot

Every morning just after her shower, Vanita Nargund slips downstairs to a room that used to be an office but is now what she calls “God’s room.” She lights two oil lamps from her childhood home in southern India, sits cross-legged on an area rug, and focuses her mind on what’s most important to her, things that transcend her days working in accounting near Princeton, New Jersey. Lately, she’s been praying for her 86-year-old father and her three sisters still in India, asking Hindu deities to protect them from COVID. Her words are soft but urgent, and full of her love: “Give them strength and bravery to fight through.”

A woman who died in a house fire in Waihī is being remembered as a “generous and caring” neighbour. The 63-year-old died following a significant fire at the property on Queen Street in Waihī on Monday morning. Emergency services were alerted to the house fire around 10.40am. When they arrived the house was already engulfed in flame. Police and fire are still investigating the cause of her death.
