Breeks Memorial Anglo Indian School
UDHAGAMANDALAM: Standing tall as a red castle, the massive structure in British-styled architecture located in Church Hill area in Ooty is a prominent landmark that nobody could miss.
Breeks Memorial School (now known as Breeks Memorial Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School) has been functioning from the building since it was built in 1886 at the cost of Rs 38,180. However, the school was established in 1874 to cater to Europeans, Eurasians and to the natives in the hills.
When James Wilkinson Breeks, the first commissioner (district collector) died in 1872, it was decided to establish a school in his name in memory of his services to the Nilgiris community. While the government paid a sum of Rs 13, 682 towards the cause, funds were raised through public subscriptions and debentures of Rs 4,000 and Rs 6,000 respectively.
